Looking for Organic Food Supplier/Grocery Wholesales/Fresh Seafood Wholesaler?

Good morning all,

I've finally finished work and am now on my 1st day of maternity leave. Baby is due any days now so I'm planning to take it easy before the storm hits :) I'll try to spend these few days updating my blog as much as possible (few posts have been sitting in draft for a while, sorry again for being M.I.A).

In today's post, I'll be sharing very useful information shared by our neighbour (Thanks a lot Merizsa) on food suppliers in Johor:

1). Grand Meltique

Food seafood and Japanese food lovers, Grand Meltique is a wholesaler which sells live and frozen seafood suppliers as well as Japanese food. Based on feedback from our neighbour, this wholesaler supplies pretty good shashimi grade salmon fillets which are cheaper than supermart. You can check out their website on the type of seafood available.

2). Total Ocean

Supplier of organic food. The proprietor, Mee Ling can converse in English.

Next to Total Ocean is a grocery wholesaler called Soon Huat. Very reasonable prices. The proprietor is an Indonesian Chinese. She can't speak English though. Only Mandarin and Teochew.

3). Harvest Frozen Food Sdn. Bhd.

Harvest is a small family run wholesaler of frozen and chilled meat, fine food and a variety of condiments. I did a massive purchase to stock up on rib eye & T-Bone steaks, beef ribs, beef slices for shabu2, lamb cutlets, leg of lambs, dory fish, fish & chips, scallops and more for RM670 (we're talking about supplies sufficient to last for few months). The guy in the shop is very friendly and would help to cut and airpack your steak cuts.

Location: No. 101, Jalan Sutera 1, Taman Sutera Sentosa, 80150, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Email: harvestfrozen@gmail.com, sales@harvestfrozen.com

I hope these are useful, happy food shopping!EO

A Little Taste of Mexican in Nusa Bestari

It's always great to see more variaties to local dining scene. As soon as Piedra was opened, it became the talk of our neighborhood so I was very eager to test out the food.

I must say that they did not disappoint at all. Food was great, atmosphere and service was also great. Since it was a while ago (sorry i have been very slow in updating my blog...i know), i cant remember the names of the dishes, but all of them were very nice. I also love the buah dong dong drink (not really Mexican but love it anyway).

Dinner for 4 cost us about RM200+, including a few bottles of beers. When we went couple months ago, the restaurant manager/key chef (transferred from Sg temporarily) was very friendly and nice. I'm not sure who's running the restaurant now but i hope the quality of food and service remain great.

I would recommend this eating joint, even if you're not into Mexican food, go for few drinks and enjoy the open seating concept.
Enjoy!

Best Rice Noodles (Kway Teow) in JB

Thanks to Johor Kaki blog, I've found my favourite soup kway teow (rice noodle) in Johor (actually & Singapore). Soup rice noodle is one of my all time favourite and being a Teochew, it's something that I grew up eating.

The name of this traditional and old shop is Restoran Sekee. It's located at 30, Jalan Segget, JB, GPS: 1.458202,103.764383. The shop is opened almost daily except Saturday & public holidays from 7.30 am to 1 or 1.30 pm.

Since I do not like internal organs, I ordered soup kway teow with pork meat, which cost RM5. The soup is refreshing, light, not oily at all. The pork meat is juicy and tender while the kway teow is light and smooth. This is as close to my hometown's kway teow soup dish as I can get. It's yummy and I would super recommend this to anyone who likes soup rice noodles.

TGIF Friday

Thank God it's the weekend! It's been a while since I last went to a TGIF Friday's restaurant. I didn't realise that there's also a branch in Johor until our friends took us there last night. We had good meals and relaxing time, so it was a great way to kick-start the weekend.

The restaurant has been around for a long time, though the interior is not new, it provides a nice ambience for a relaxing dinner with friends and families.

We ordered quite a no of items:
Beef tacos:

Osso buco:

Lamb cutlets:

French onion soup:

Mix platter starter:

Buffalo wings:

+ drinks and desserts
The dinner cost ~340RM, which I think is quite reasonably priced given the amount of food we ordered. The food was also quite nice, so I would go back again :)

A Walk Around JB Town - Jln Meldrum

Since most places were closed, we went to explore JB town to grab dinner on Chinese New Year's first day and stumbled across Jalan Meldrum and this small street with hidden food stalls. You can see from this street in the last picture (bottom right). This tiny street, actually it's more like a back alley, is filled with Muslim food stalls. You can find satays, bbq seafood, kambing soup (mutton soup) and other halal dishes here.

My family decided to keep walking and so we found another food stall (on the next street to the right of the small lane). We had satays, bbq stingrays, stir fried vegies, fried calamari and steam fish. Though the food was not super great, it was nice to get together with our family and have an easy night out :) & the beer made the food taste nicer!

In case if you're interested in exploring this area, here's the map to Jalan Meldrum:

Italian Dinner @ Gianni Trattoria JB

I had to rewrite and re-post this entry as iPad erased my article when I tried to do a very small edit :(

I've heard and read a lot about Gianni's Trattoria which is currently rated as top 10 restaurants in Johor in TripAdvisor. We decided to give this place a shot.

Gianni is an upscale Italian restaurant which serves pizzas, pastas and other Italian cuisine. It's located at 110 Jalan Serampang JB, an upmarket area (kinda of) in Johor filled with bridal shops, saloons, restaurants, car showrooms (Lexus for example) and pubs.

Appetizers are priced in the range of RM15+ - RM28 while main course meals are priced in the range of RM20+ - RM90+

We ordered caprese, tomato soup with scallops, spaghetti frutti mare (seafood spaghetti), carbonara, creme caramel, banana split and drinks (+ glass of wine). Yes, it was quite a lot for 2 people but we wanted to try as many dishes as we can :)

While the appetizers were very nice (especially the tomato soup), I was quite disappointed that the main course and desserts were nice but not great. Since the restaurant is halal, they had to substitute pork bacon with turkey bacon which is very chewy and doesn't really do justice to the carbonara. Our dinner cost RM231 and it's definitely cheaper than the price we'd pay in Singapore. However, I still much prefer Italian food @ Valentino's or Pasta Brava in Singapore.

Appetizers & main course
Desserts

Overall...hmmm, I say give this restaurant a shot. Afterall, it's still nice to have the option to go for fine dining in Johor. However, I would not rate the food as high as what others have rated.
